The Cold War is an intense stand-off between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic after 3653 BBY. The Treaty of Coruscant ended the Great Galactic War, sealing the Sith Empire's victory. Peace was gained, but tensions between the Sith and the Republic remained high. In the thirty years after the war, fear and uncertainty gripped the galaxy. Border skirmishes and proxy wars between the Sith Empire and the Republic erupted and the uneasy truce between the two foes appeared to be on the verge of collapse.

History[]

The terms of the punitive Treaty of Coruscant called for an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of all Republic and Jedi forces from battlefields across the galaxy. As the Treaty went into effect, worlds once allied with the Republic were left defenseless, and were quickly absorbed by the Empire. Coruscant was also placed under the rule of the Sith Empire for a short time.

As the Jedi returned to their ruined temple on Coruscant, they were met by the anger of the Senate, who placed blame for the war at the feet of the Order. The Jedi, unable to stay on Coruscant where public opinion had turned against them, relocated to the world of their origin, Tython.

Although his Empire was stronger than ever, the Sith Emperor no longer seemed to desire total conquest. He handed over control of the Empire to the Dark Council, a body of twelve Sith Lords who would oversee the day-to-day affairs of state. The Dark Lord went on to pursue his own mysterious goals as the Sith consolidated their power.

Border skirmishes and proxy wars between the Sith and Republic erupted and the uneasy truce between the two foes appeared to be on the verge of collapse. The conflict included small battles in the Outer Rim and other conflicts fought by proxy. One such conflict was the Civil War on Ord Mantell between the corrupt planetary government that remained loyal to the Republic and a guerilla force of separatists wishing to secede.

Although the galactic situation could easily have erupted into another galactic conflict, neither side was ready to wage a full-scale war yet again. During the Cold War, Kel Dor Jedi Master Gnost-Dural made a record of the events surrounding the treaty at the behest of the Jedi Council on Tython.

Proxy conflicts[]

Alderaan Civil War[]

Main article: Alderaan Civil War

Tensions on Alderaan can be traced to events that arose due to the controversial Treaty of Coruscant which resulted Alderaan's secession from the Republic, becoming an independent system. Shortly after Gaul Panteer, the Crown Prince of Alderaan and Senator who made the decision, was assassinated; days later the Queen died, and without an heir to succeed her the Parliament of Alderaan was deadlocked on which of the noble houses should inherit the throne.

Events remained relatively peaceful until one house used force in order to attain setting the stage for the Alderaan Civil War, with the other houses following suit. The conflict ceased to be internal when an exiled house returned with Imperial backing, and the Galactic Republic openly began backing House Organa. Whilst neither the Republic or Imperial superpowers officially had troops on the ground, the civil war became one of many conflicts between the two whilst galactic events teetered on a return open war.

Battle of Balmorra[]

Main article: Battle of Balmorra

During the Great Galactic War the Sith Empire launched a brutal invasion of Balmorra which eventually saw the highly industrial and strategically valuable world becoming occupied by the Empire. Despite a fully fledged occupation, and the Republic officially handing control over to the Empire in the Treaty of Coruscant, resistance to Imperial rule continued on into the Cold War.

Because of the treaty the Balmmorrans were left to resist Imperial control alone, with many feeling utterly betrayed by the Galactic Republic, until the Republic sent in covert aid in the form of an illegally operating Republic contingent. After several years of relatively unsuccessful guerrilla warfare the Republic began to ramp up its military presence, thereby pushing the limits of the Treaty of Coruscant.

Ord Mantell Civil War[]

The Ord Mantell Civil War is another example of planetary resistance in reaction to the Treaty of Coruscant. The Mantellian Separatist Movement is waging a campaign in order to attain independence from the Galactic Republic and its corrupt interplanetary government.

The Republic has deployed it's elite Republic Special Forces unit, Havoc Squad, to deal with the threat posed by the Separatists, who are highly supported by the planets populous. The Sith Empire is not known to be supporting the Separatist movement, making the conflict internal.
