Star Wars: The Old Republic Wiki

Disciplines, commonly known as specializations or specs, defines a player's role, abilities, and combat strengths in the game. Each advanced class/combat style has access to three choices of discipline.

The active Discipline will determine:

  • Role - Tank, Healer, Ranged DPS or Melee DPS
  • Additional active and passive abilities
  • Strengths, weaknesses and playstyle

It is possible to change disciplines in the character window, or by activating a loadout. However, the player must be in a rest zone (sanctuary/cantina), or buy the character-specific perk Field Respecialization (150k credits) to change it directly where they are.

Disciplines have no effect before level 15, but after that point they will unlock new abilities and passives. The choice of a discipline determines whether the Player's Role is to heal, tank, or do damage. The choices available can limit some advanced classes which only have access to certain roles. Some advanced classes allow to offheal or offtank in a wrong discipline for a short time, but are never capable to fulfill this role to a satisfying degree. By determining combat role, choice of specialization can also determine secondary factors such as which set bonuses are favoured. Some classes - sometimes called 'pure' classes - have the same combat role for all their specializations, while others - known as 'hybrid' classes - can perform a number of combat roles depending on their specialization. However, even for pure classes, each specialization has its own character and playstyle, different strengths and weaknesses, and offers a significantly different experience of the class.

Every advanced class possesses 3 disciplines. In the game overall there are a total of 24 different disciplines available. Noting that there are 8 base classes and 2 advanced classes per base class, one might expect a total of 48 named disciplines. However, as with classes and their names, every Imperial discipline is mirrored on the Republic side and vice versa - each one has a corresponding equivalent discipline that is functionally identical but with a different name. That is to say disciplines come in related cross-faction pairs. For example, Darkness and Telekinetic Combat have exactly the same playstyle and the only difference are the names of the skills. Another example is that the Sith Juggernaut's Immortal discipline is equivalent to the Jedi Guardian's Defense discipline, sharing the same article called Immortal\Defense.

Below is a complete list of the disciplines available to each combat style.

Update history[]

With Patch 3.0.0 and the Shadow of Revan expansion, this system replaced the previous skill trees.

Because players already start with an advanced class, characters are automatically set to a default discipline when created. It is no longer necessary to pick a specific discipline to get started.

The <Skill Mentor> on the Fleet in the Combat Training Section is no longer required to change discipline.
