An origin story (formerly class) of a character primarily determines their faction and the story mission content that the character has access to. Origin stories are chosen during character creation and cannot be changed. Origin stories also determine voice acting, class companions (including romance options), and the default Subscriber choices of playable species. The type of origin story also has some effect on the available combat styles, as the type of combat style chosen must match whether the origin story is a Force-user class or Technology-user class. [1]
There are 8 unique origin stories, evenly split between the Republic and Imperial factions. The player will be in the faction of their origin story. Each origin story has independent story arcs and companions up to level 50.[2] Completing Act 2 of an origin story grants a class specific emote and a buff related to the former class of that origin story (not the combat style the player is using in that playthrough) across the player's server legacy, while finishing the entire origin story (up to Act 3) unlocks an ability used by the former class of that origin story across the legacy.

History[]
At the release of the game, the player only chose the character's class and decided later on which of their class's two advanced classes to take later around level 10. Later on at Game Update 5.0.0, advanced classes were now moved to character creation. Due to this, advanced class trainers are removed. During these times, class affected the choice of roles available (DPS, healer, tank), as Jedi Knights and Sith Warriors could not be healers while Smugglers and Imperial Agents could not be tanks. Weapon choice is also restricted by class; for example assault cannons could only be used by Troopers while sniper rifles could only be used by Agents.
In 2023 at Game Update 7.0.0, these choices were expanded with the Combat Styles update. Classes were renamed to "origin stories" that are primarily responsible for the character's story content and grouped into Force-users or Tech-users. The advanced classes were renamed to combat styles, and combined from both factions. Now even when taking any origin story, the player can now choose any of the 8 advanced combat styles within their Force or Tech group, including their faction counterparts. In other words as long as the chosen combat style is of the same type as their origin story, it can be chosen. Also, as abilities are now automatically learned, class trainers are now speeder piloting trainers. In addition, finishing an entire origin story on any character unlocks a second combat style for all characters in the legacy (subscribers only).
Most individualized class story content ends after level 50, the original level cap for the game, as the story starts to converge. However in later expansions there still may be occasional references and callbacks to the player's origin story.
