Two Wikis

  • I like the philosophy of wikipedia, having two star wars TOR wikis looks unproductive to me.

One will get more popular and the other will slowly die off, in the meantime people add content that might get lost. Wouldn't it be better to merge the two wikis? Of course we'd need full cooperation of the ones that made/run/own the 2 wikis, I hope one or both are willing to give something up for the greater good.

If needed I can do some merging work. Greets --Fei-Ke 11:23, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

    • There are more wikis then two for TOR and merging all them are not a good idea. You are right, some will die, some will live forever. But merging them to one does not means it will live foreever. Because actualy, wiki or a normal site, its not important for users, they just looking for information, and till we keep the site with good information and with a clean interface, this site will not die. We will always have many users, like now. --callawey 19:17, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
      • You have many users now, but what happens when the game is released? 1000's more users... will your servers be able to take the strain? do you even have your own servers? You can not say with clear confidence that this one will not die as you do not know that it won't, The swtor wiki on the Wikia network has the clear advantage of being able to take the stress of any number of users, being on the same network as all the other major Wikia, like Wookiepedia and the World of Warcraft wiki. It may be a pointless question since you seem very unwilling for any sort of merger but if you were to ever reconsider we can make you admin, if you agree to it, over on Alexsau1991 21:50, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
      • I have a road plan for the wiki, i am a software developer and i know too about the servers and strains. When the time comes, of course, i will move on a better server with a better connection. It will handle all the stress of any number of users. In other hand, yes you are right, we dont know which one will die and maybe none of them will die, but if i accept to merge the sites, i ill lose everything and i will only get a admin title, which seems pointless to me. In other hand, this wiki gets 4 offer with a great price since two months, i refused them too. So merging for free seems much more pointless. For now, merging is not a option for me. But if wikia wants to much this, we can talk about everything for any help for both sites, except merging. You can contact me via yelekin (at) You can ask me everything on the email. callawey 05:51, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Things to think about

With the release of the game less than a month away, I think we should consider some new layout options for the Main page. Once the game is released, News will play a much smaller role in "Front page" consideration. I believe we need to highlight more of the content and better direct visitors on their quest for knowledge. Feel free to put up some ideas in a sandbox for consideration. -- Wynthyst File:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 15:32, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

I'll give it some thought. Whatever we implement needs to present the information in an organic manner; the database serves as the direct information resource, so we need to focus on delivering the more human side of things. By focusing on lore content and item/NPC/zone interactions, as well as game mechanics, we can offer something useful to the community while defining a specific role for ourselves amongst our allied projects.
I was wondering, is Curse considering the addition of a guild-oriented project to our SWTOR network? If there are plans for this we should let it be handled by a dedicated site, but if not I think we should consider including full support of guilds here. We could design our community hub with guilds in mind, and alter our current news setup to serve as a game-wide "what's happening" feed. -- Heaven's Agent 16:14, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
While the database includes lots of information, there is, of course, no reason not to include all that information in the wiki as well. While the database is more structured, our pages on items, NPCs etc. can be more detailed. I'm working on getting the database entries link to the wiki - I'll let you guys know as soon as it happens. Ausir 17:25, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
I don't believe there are any plans for a separate guild related site (like WoWstead), and given the official site's focus on providing guild related stuff, I'm not sure it's something worth considering. As for providing full support of guilds here, by offering them a designated namespace (as we have already done), they already have a full documentation space. Of course additional functionality can be implemented by expanding on the guild infobox, etc, but, in my experience, guilds come and go often in a game, and guild pages tend to become outdated quickly for the vast majority that are created. Currently it is set up strictly as an optional service to guilds, relying on their commitment to maintain their own guild page information etc. Trying to do anything other generally turns into a maintenance nightmare. -- Wynthyst File:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 17:37, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Fair enough. Still, I'll keep turning over ideas in the back of my mind; if I come up with something feasible, that might address these concerns, I'll bring it up. -- Heaven's Agent 17:39, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Items with multiple icons

Many items in the game have different icons depending on the class of the character viewing them. A Jedi Knight and a Sith Warrior viewing the same item, for example, would see two different icons representing that single item. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding how to address this within our project? Should we select one icon over the others? Show them all? Or something else entirely? -- Heaven's Agent 08:06, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

We've dealt with the same problem on STOWiki by showing the different icons side-by-side. Technically, this was for abilities, not items. That said, after taking a glance at what you've been doing, I also see that might diminish the vendorbox UI-look you seem to be going for. Still, choosing just one seems more awkward to me because that might give the impression of the wiki favoring one faction over the other. :/ Eyes File:User-Eyes-Sig.png 10:11, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
I'd have to make some alts to check, but now that I think about it the different icons seen may be based on faction, rather than class. If this is the case, we can consider using two version of the vendor store templates I've been making, since vendors are not ganerally shared across factions (exceptions exist, such as in the shared regions of Nar Shaddaa); a republic version would be utilized for republic vendors, and an empire version for imperial vendors. That said, if there are no more than two variations, it wouldn't be that hard to redesign my templates slightly to allow for a second icon. I don't think two icons used in such a manner would be that disruptive. I'll get to checking that out. -- Heaven's Agent 14:36, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
Alright, I just checked and the different icons are based on faction; every character on a faction will see one icon, every character on the other faction will see a different icon. Class itself is irrelevant. I'll start reworking my item and vendor templates to support two icons. Hopefully we won't end up finding items that use more than this later in the game. >.< -- Heaven's Agent 15:07, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

DB item population

Discussion moved to Forum:DB item population

Java functionality

Thinking about ways to improve this project last night, I recalled a couple of applications that we might be able to use. I believe they're java-based, though I could be wrong. In any case, though they're traditionally utilized in databases I've seen them both implemented on wiki projects successfully:

Tooltip popups
Example: WoWPedia

These are tooltips that are generated when a user hovers their mouse cursor over a linked item. They can be formatted to appear similar to the tooltips found within the game, and essentially include all data within the infobox located on that item's wiki article. This functionality has always been popular with WoW's game community, and for a signifigant portion it is one of the primary reasons they use WoWPedia. I've tried implementing the functionality on other projects before, but failed miserably; my understanding of javascript is minimal, if that. That said, I did derive Template:ItemLink from WoWPedia's code and now utilize it as a placeholder on projects I work on. I've always believed someone familiar with java would be able to convert the template ti facilitate this functionality, if anyone should ever be inclined.

Objective maps
Example: Champions Online Wiki (click on the coordinates link in the infobox)

If we could find some way to generate one or more icons on a zone map, either individually or simultaneously, We could provide a more visual method for our visitors to find mission objectives, NPCs, and items in the game world. On the Champions Online Wiki, was turned into a template that took you to a predefined map image and placed an icon at the specified coordinates. That functionality alone could be worthwhile, but it would be nice if we could take it even further; generate a portion of the larger map, and generate icons on this smaller are within an article itself.

Anyway, these are just some ideas. They're beyond my ability to implement, but perhaps they're something someone more knowledgeable would want to run with. -- Heaven's Agent 18:58, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

I could get the javascript tooltips running if I worked at it for a good while, but I think in this case it would be easier to ask the creator to help us port it over. Felix Omni 02:06, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
I've talked to the folks at WoWPedia in the past, and they expressed a willingness to help get the tooltips functioning. In fact, I was working with them directly when I attempted to get it running on HammerWiki. I still couldn't get it too work from my end, due to my lack of knowledge; we'd need someone familiar with javascript to take lead on this. -- Heaven's Agent 02:17, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Subcategorization of item icons

I know we generally don't want to utilize subcategorization on this project. That said, contributors are going to have to search through potentially hundreds of item icons in order to find what they need when adding or editing item articles. So, in this specific instance, I'd like to go ahead and incorporate a subcategory structure. It should help to make what will quickly become a massive collection of icons a little more manageable. What are everyone's thoughts? -- Heaven's Agent 05:26, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

We have the category Category:Icons and within that Category:Item icons and then Category:Consumables icons, etc. Why not continue with that structure? --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 14:18, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
I plan to. But without subcategorizing that structure it's quickly becoming very convoluted. And I haven't added that many item icons to the project yet. -- Heaven's Agent 14:22, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Wouldn't it be better to just include the icon on the appropriate category instead of including the higher level categories as well? That should cut down on the clutter. --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 15:12, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
I don't think so. Contributors are going to have to search through a massive log of icons, and the items that use those icons will not always conform to a single type. This is especially true of mission items.
For example, the icon for a mission item might be a pair of boots. However, the contributor would have to guess which category of icons those boots can be found in. If they are looking in the wrong category, they won't know if the icon is actually found elsewhere, or if they simply overlooked it. However, if all feet equipment icons belong to a higher-level category, the contributor can simply search there. They'll know they're looking in the right place.
Limiting articles to lowest-level categories works in most cases. Even in the case of searching for item icons, if the item your working on conforms to standards it will be easiest to look in this lowest-level. That said, there are many items that do not follow these standards, and without populating the higher-level categories as well it can become difficult to find what you're looking for. -- Heaven's Agent 15:45, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
It's a shame that the icons don't have a more detailed file name than a number. It would make categorizing easier. How about putting all inventory related categories in Category:Item icons and not going any deeper than that? For example under the item category put Category:Feet light armor icons (maybe even just call it Category:Feet armor icons) and Category:Stimulant icons and so on. There'd be a lot of subcategories within the item category, but it'd be less clicking. Just a thought. --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 15:57, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
If we did it that way, we'd end up with dozens of categories linked to a single parent. If we consider armor icon categories alone, we'd have over 45 categories. Additionally, we'd still have the problem of having to hunt through several of those categories in order to locate icons for items that do not conform to the basic item/icon structure. If we did it this way, we'd have to hunt for the icon categories themselves as well.
We might be able to exclude icons from certain upper-level categories in the structure. After all, if a category's contents get too convoluted, the purpose of that category breaks down. Without a purpose, a category shouldn't exist within the project. For example, we probably wouldn't need to place all item icons into Category:Item icons, nor all equipment icons in Category:Equipment icons. That said, we'd probably want all feet armor icons in Category:Equipment icons/Feet armor icons, or its equivalent.
This structure needs to be defined as a true directory, even moreso than the rest of the project's category structure; for everything else, categories are a secondary navigation system and index. For icons, the category system will be the primary method of navigation. -- Heaven's Agent 16:28, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

DPL forum

Hi, maybe you'd like us to install the DPL forum extension for you (the one Wikia uses, as does The Vault - Fallout Wiki, now hosted at Curse? I think it's a better way of discussing policies and other ideas for the wiki than doing it on the main page's talk page. Ausir 18:26, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

I think a forum extension would prove very useful; you're correct that it does serve to facilitate project-wide discussion much better than talk pages. -- Heaven's Agent 18:47, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
No, we have a forum, it's called Darth Hater. There is no need for a forum on the wiki. -- Wynthyst File:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 15:37, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
That's not our forum, though; there's not really any place on DarthHater for wiki-specific discussion. We're allied, part of a single network of fan sites, but we are different projects. We need something here specifically for discussing matter relevant to our work. Not a general forum, as that is the purview of DH, but a forum that we can utilize in those instances when we need to communicate and discuss issues specific to this project and this community. -- Heaven's Agent 17:00, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
I don't see the problem of using the community portal talk page. I thought that's what it's purpose is, at least that's what the community portal talk pages are on every other wiki I've ever been on. Or just the talk pages of specific pages that are being discussed since again, that is their purpose. Adding a wiki specific forum seems unnecessary and redundant and only serves to further fragment discussion. -- 04:19, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Anyway, this just a proposal - if the community thinks that a more structured forum on the wiki (still very much based on wiki pages) could be useful, we can set one up. If not, we won't be imposing one on you. While other wikis tend to have general discussion forums about the game etc. there, I think we could just limit it to discussions about the wiki here, since we have Darth Hater for general SWTOR discussions. Curse flame Ausir (talk) 16:33, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm for having a forum as a central point of discussion. As it is now, we have discussions scattered all over the place and they're hard to keep track of. --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 17:09, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Multiple upload

Hi, just so you know, we have activated the Multiple Upload extension that allows you to upload more than one file at the same time. Hope it'll come in handy. Curse flame Ausir (talk) 20:57, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! That'll come in handy while we're adding tons of screenshots and icons. --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 21:10, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
There's a couple things to know about this extension. It's designed to upload 5 images at a time. If you use it to upload fewer than 5, it will give you an error message for each missing image (i.e. if you upload 4 images, you will see one error message, if you upload 3 images, it will give you two error messages). This is a known bug in the extension itself, and there's nothing to be done about it other than notify the creators of the extension and ask them to fix it (which has been done). The extension works just fine, I just wanted you to be aware you would see these errors. -- Wynthyst File:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 16:30, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Surprisingly when I used it yesterday and uploaded only 3, there was no error message. Thanks for the heads up! --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 16:32, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Main page redesign

Now that the game has been launched, news is no longer a primary draw, information, and links to that information is. I would like to suggest it might be time to rethink/redesign the main page to make more optimal use of the space, by eliminating, or at least restricting the news to only the most recent/important items, and maximizing the numbers of links that will take visitors directly to content. -- Wynthyst File:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 22:08, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

No one has an opinion on this? -- Wynthyst File:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 09:33, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Good ideas goes without saying. Instead of news, there could be certain articles on the wiki we are especially proud over. Or maybe known bugs and upcoming patches.
The quick links are good!
/Glom 13:00, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
I think we can leave the page layout as it is and maybe instead of having a blurb about the game at the top, show a featured article. The wiki and curse news can be moved over to the side and share space with the game news and the quick links can be expanded. --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 14:34, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
I've never been very good at designing front pages. I do know I'd like to replace any links that lead directly to categories; the links on our front page should lead to actual content pages within our primary namespace. That said, it may be a while before we have articles to replace those category links.
In general I think the look is good for now, and probably will be for another month or two. Once we have more core articles finished and in place, however, we'll want to rebuild our frontpage to feature them. -- Heaven's Agent 14:39, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
I've added more links to the main page, with armor, weapons and crafting sections. Curse flame Ausir (talk) 20:57, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
I removed the news, random images, spotlight and wiki announcements since they were all very outdated. -- Wynthyst File:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 02:17, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Misspelled titles

I know I am not a member of this wiki, eventually I will, but i thought someone should point out that in the page titles Republic is spelled Repubic, missing the L. I noticed it when adding to my bookmarks. 11:48, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Fixed, thanks! Curse flame Ausir (talk) 14:15, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Can we add the PVP Page to the portal? thanks :)

Will Robots be made into a playable race?

It is unknown at this time if droids will ever be a playable option.
Bioware has stated that there are plans for additional playable species, but they have not elaborated as to what they may be. These additions are not expected until the game's first expansion, and only if SWTOR proves successful enough to have such an expansion. -- Heaven's Agent 16:02, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Does anyone know whether or not Mandalorian's will be made into a playable species?

Mandalorians are not a species, and as such will not be available as a playable species to players. They are in fact an organization of individuals from varying backgrounds and worlds working together as hunters/mercenaries in the tradition of the Mandalores. Several years ago it was postulated that the Mandalorians could be present in the game as a third playable faction, and Bioware admits they considered this possibility, but the idea was abandoned for the two-faction system that is currently in the game. Due to the way the game has been developed toward this end it is unlikely that Mandalorians will ever be a playable faction. -- Heaven's Agent 16:02, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

In my opinion, the left-hand column needs "valign=top" tags in the row headings. Specifically for the "Settings" vs "Tech Support" section, the "Classes" vs "Species" section, and the "Gameplay" vs "Crew Skills" section. I believe this change would look more professional (and would help my inner "Sheldon Cooper" stay silent and leave me alone...)    ;-)
