Overview

The terentatek is a predator, and we Jedi are its prey.
~ Deesra Luur Jada on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Terentatek were creatures which fed off the blood of Force-sensitives, and inhabited caves and tombs strong with the dark side of the Force. Several guarded the entrance to a section of Naga Sadow's tomb.

Jedi killers

Few creatures in the galaxy are as deadly as the legendary Terentatek. These beast cut imposing figures; their hulking frames are covered in an array of spikes, and each is armed with tusks and claws that deliver lethal venom. Their prowess and hostility are well-known throughout the galaxy, but perhaps the creature's most impressive quality is its hide, which is highly resistant to force attacks. This exceptional defense, combined with its raw power and violent nature, makes the Terentatek formidable even to teams of the most skilled warriors.

The origins of the Terentatek are shrouded in mystery; one theory purports they evolved amidst the dark energies on Korriban, shaped and corrupted by the rituals of early dark jedi. Another hypotesis claims that the sith lord Exar Kun created the Terentatek by subjecting Rancors to his strange force experiments. Regardless of their true origins, the Terentatek pose a great threat to any in their path - especially force-sensitives. Wheter it was the period in which they originated or not, Terentatek spread across the galaxy most rapidly during the reign of Exar Kun. The sith lord bred them specifically to destroy jedi holdings across many worlds. The creatures became permanent residents on these worlds, seeking out areas strong in the dark side and going dormant for manby years before re-emerging to hunt again. Jedi have repeatedly attempted ro tid the galaxy of the Terentatek, but none of their efforts have been successful to date.

Biology

Terentatek resembled rancors, except they had a number of spines growing from their backs and a pair of flaps, or horny projections rather like tusks attached to their mouths. Supposedly, terentatek could hibernate and remain dormant for many years, only to return when the dark side was strong in the galaxy.

History

Terentatek originally evolved on Korriban, where the power and presence of the dark side gradually distorted their shapes and corrupted their minds. Some sources, however, say that they were first created on Yavin 4 by Exar Kun, as one of his experiments in 3,997 BBY. It is possible that terentateks are highly altered rancors undergoing many experiments. Regardless, terentatek were almost completely immune to effects of the Force. Only certain aspects would work. They became the most dangerous of the creatures bred by the Sith. They were so powerful and dangerous to the Jedi, that they were often dubbed Jedi Killers.

During an event known as the Great Hunt, numerous Jedi traveled throughout the galaxy to try to exterminate the terentatek. Jedi were often sent in groups of two or three to battle these beasts, and the Jedi of the group had a strong Force bond between them. This was done so that the group could strengthen itself from the dark influence prevalent in the lairs of the terentatek, and as it had to rely on its weaponry skills alone due to the almost complete Force immunity of the terentatek. None of the hunts were successful, however. Even though the Jedi seemingly exterminated a majority of the terentatek each time, the waxing of the dark side would trigger the terentatek to come out of hibernation and repopulate the galaxy. Such events included the rise to power of Revan, Malak, and Emperor Palpatine.

Terentatek were also found on Tatooine, Onderon, Tython, and Yavin 4. During the Jedi Civil War, Revan and his companions found and killed a terentatek in Kashyyyk's Shadowlands while searching for the Star Forge. It had been a ceremonial beast used in an old Wookiee ritual. In one such ritual many years ago, Bacca's Ceremonial Blade had broken from its hilt and become embedded in the creature's flesh when a headstrong Wookiee chieftain had attempted to slay it—the blade was recovered by Revan. Revan also single-handedly fought and killed two terentateks in the tomb of Naga Sadow. There was also a terentatek in the Shyrak Caves on Korriban, which turned out to be near the entrance to the tomb of Ludo Kressh.
